2020 Clagett Memorial Regatta Postponed to 2021

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 30, 2020) – After considerable assessment and review, the board of the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta have determined that due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the 2020 Clagett Regatta in Newport and the Clagett/Oakcliff Match Race Clinegatta will be postponed until 2021.

Extraordinary times require extraordinary actions.  Safety, health, and fun have always been Clagett’s guidelines. Although The Clagett Newport and the Clagett/Oakcliff regattas are being postponed from 2020 to 2021, we will be reaching out to our Clagett sailors and extended Clagett family over the summer to keep Clagett participants and supporters engaged through shared camaraderie by participating in the Dave and Dave online coaching sessions and other fun activities.  I am looking forward to being “Virtually” connected with the Clagett sailing community over the coming months,” commented Clagett President and Co-Founder Judy Clagett McLennan (Portsmouth, R.I.)

Safety is even more of a priority in this unprecedented time.  Oakcliff is finding creative and practical solutions for many of the new challenges but not for all.  The required social distancing cannot be maintained at a regatta serving disabled sailors so postponing to 2021 is the smart move.  We remain committed to the event and look forward to next summer,” said Oakcliff Sailing Executive Director, Dawn Riley.

Dates for the 18th Clagett Regatta and the 5th Clagett/Oakcliff Match Race Clinegatta, now being held in 2021 will be announced in due course.

The Clagett would like to thank their sponsors, supporters, volunteers and partners for their continued support.

News From Jane - CSSD Ashore & Afloat

Hi Everyone,

I hope you and your families are safe and well.

As you probably know, Challenged Sailors San Diego had to pause our sailing operations for a while due to Covid-19. Although we can’t get back out on the water yet, there are many opportunities to stay connected to the sailing community, at least online. Here are some suggestions of webinars, videos, and websites that you might find informative, challenging, and just plain fun. I hope you enjoy them!

Our Challenged Sailors San Diego website is a great resource.   https://www.challengedsailors.org
On this website, you can find the latest news about our organization, a link to the CSSD Facebook page, links to several of the webinars and online events showcasing sailing, photo galleries of past sailing events and regattas, and a fabulous training and education page. The training and education page includes charts of San Diego Bay (you can see where all the shallow places in the bay are!), sailing manuals designed to teach you how to sail a Martin, videos about how to rig and sail a Martin (done by Don Martin, who was the original designer of our boats), videos of how to tie knots, and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Feel free to spend time exploring the website. I think you’ll be surprised at how much information is there!

The US Sailing website is also very informative.  https://www.ussailing.org
It’s usually a good resource for all types of sailing information and classes. Unfortunately, due to social distancing requirements, all classes have gone online or are postponed. They do have a page with great videos on maintaining and servicing inflatable life jackets (for those of you who have them). https://www.ussailing.org/education/adult/safety-at-sea-courses/safety-at-sea-resources/

US Sailing is also doing an excellent job of producing a sailing video EVERY DAY to help us maintain our connection to this wonderful sport. These videos are all accessible on the
Starboard Portal website  https://www.ussailing.org/starboard-portal/
I highly recommend that you check this website out. It has videos on sailing skills, racing tactics, safety, environmental lessons, STEM lessons, Olympic dreams, sailing fitness, long distance sailing…the list goes on. There’s enough variety that I know you’ll find something to interest you. Be sure to click the arrow buttons on each side of the page, because there are more videos win each category than originally appear.

Ullman Sails San Diego has produced several excellent free webinar videos about a variety of topics.  https://sandiego.ullmansails.com/essential_grid/free-webinars-the-unlocking-series/
The topics include sail trim, sailing at night, sailing to Mexico, race starts, and many more. I hope you check them out.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is posting videos of their weekly webinar on the Racing Rules of Sailing.  https://www.youtube.com/rya1875
If you want to race, or are currently a racer that is looking to get a better understanding of the racing rules, this is a great resource. They have already done 3 webinars, which appear about halfway down the page. Just look for the “Racing Rules” section. There will be 6 videos in total when the series is finished.

For those of you who think that sailing with an asymmetrical spinnaker might be exciting, this is an excellent video showing how it is done on a small boat.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg1EwlQpH5o
Because of the set-up of the Martins, although the jobs of our helms person and crew would be the same, our helms person sits in the front seat, and our crew (companion) sits in the back.

These last two videos are just for fun...

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, check out this video    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olFNIqe9ylA

If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle sail, this is a good video   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrqpaAizMT0

I hope this list has given you some inspiration. I’m thinking of you all.

Best wishes,

Jane Dunn

Sailing Safety Video - Inflatable Life Jackets

US Sailing provides daily videos about sailing on their Starboard Portal website. Today at 11AM, US Sailing’s safety expert, Chuck Hawley, will present a webinar on inflatable life jackets. He’ll discuss how to make sure that inflatable life jackets are safe to use each day, as well as the periodic maintenance that's required to keep them in top condition. He is an excellent presenter, and gives clear instructions and sound advice. Anyone who owns an inflatable life jacket is encouraged to join in. If you are unable to watch at the scheduled time, this video will remain on the website for later viewing.

https://www.ussailing.org/starboard-portal/

While you are on the Starboard Portal website, you will see that there is a whole collection of fun, informative videos and webinars about sailing that have been recorded previously that you will have access to.

Have fun watching, and stay safe,

Jane

"The Daves"
A Master Class for the Clagett Sailing Community

While sailors are all facing challenges and uncertain times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the coaching duo of Dave Perry and Dave Dellenbaugh have stepped up to offer an alternative to in-person coaching with an online coaching program.

“One of our board members saw on Scuttlebutt that Dave Perry and Dave Dellenbaugh have come up with coaching sessions available online, and given the coaching relationship the Clagett sailors have with them we thought it would be a great opportunity to be able to offer this to Clagett sailors,” commented Clagett
President and Co-Founder Judy Clagett McLennan.

Clagett sailors are being offered the opportunity to continue learning from the internationally renowned pair with weekly online sessions organized for Clagett sailors starting in May. The sessions are free thanks to the support of the friends of the Clagett community and start on May 9, 2020.

The sessions in this Series will be allocated on a first come - first served basis. Space will be given to the sailors first, and any race committee and other volunteers that would like to participate are also welcome to sign up, though we have a max number we can invite for each session.

The deadline to register is Monday May 4 at 5:00 PM.
